Our time in Budapest – He says

11-13 Sept – Budapest Hungary A 2.5hour train journey gets you from Vienna to Budapest. Once again the changes between the two cities are striking. Almost immediately we are targeted by a spruiker wanting to change our currency. I tried telling him no but he kept at me so I gave him our remaining Euro which came back as a wad of Hungarian Forints (HUF). While we stood in queue for the money changing booth the rates didn’t...

The 5 things that drove me crazy in österreich

1) The toilet Going to the loo is expensive in Vienna. You can expect to pay between 50c to 1 euro for the privilege of using their facilities. God help you if you don’t have the exact change! If you go you have to make sure you get your euro worth… Another thing about Austrian toilets is the poo shelf. Instead of your deposits diving into a pool of clean water they are caught on a ceramic shelf for your closer inspection...

Schwein, Wein & Bier – Dining in Vienna

Ah Vienna!  The home of the legendary Wiener schnitzel and Sacher Torte.  I dreamed about eating these delicacies in their home town, sadly I was disappointed on both counts. Kunsthalle here, museum there, church on every corner and palaces galore! Vienna is culture overload. I love this stuff but there is just to much of it to take in and stay sane. My head is brimming with ideas for paintings, drawings and sculpture. Here are my Kunst highlights. 1)...

The not so blue Danube

So we took a cruise on the blue Danube today. It was a 3.5 hour cruise from Scwedenzplatz pier on the SS Blue Danube. I came along with a romantic notion of what the Danube would be like and things were looking good as we boarded to a cheesy rendition of Strauss’ tune. The boat even had free wifi – score! I thought the river would be blue but the Danube is actually grey and green in some places. I also thought we would be...

Vienna – Austria a synopsis by JA

Vienna looks very flat from the air and much greener than Istanbul. Climate is cooler as we step off the plane and into the transit bus to the airport terminal. We notice that very suddenly the language around us has changed from Turkish to German and even though we were surrounded by darker skinned (well tanned) people in Istanbul they suddenly all seem a lot lighter here in Vienna. The airport toilets are good (read: better than...
