I’m writing this blog from seat 8B on board a Jetstar flight bound for Melbourne. We’re on our way to Bangkok for a short holiday. Now before you dob me into the AFP, FAA, CIA or whatever acronym is responsible for flight safety, let me assure you that my iPad is safely in flight mode!
This will be our fifth visit to Thailand. Every time we leave BKK we say we’re going someplace else next time but the lure of cheap flights, digs, eats and shopping is like a siren call that cannot be ignored. I love the amazing contradictions that Thailand offers. It is pious yet promiscuous, beautiful and dirty and simply pulsating with life – raw humanity.
I’m looking forward to the people watching and engaging in one of my favourite pastimes – spot the lady boy. Thai lady boys or katoeys are some of the most beautiful women on the planet. However, I have yet to see a corporate punk katoey….here’s hoping!
I’m usually super anxious, nervous excited etc before a flight overseas but unusually I don’t feel it this time. I don’t think I’ve ever been this relaxed which is strange but I’m liking the feeling. Perhaps it’s because the Kingdom has grown familiar to me? Or is my corporate plight clouding my enjoyment?
When I get off that plane and breathe in that pungent Thai perfume of orchid blossoms, chilli and raw sewage I’ll know I’m on holidays. As for my corporate worries, in the immortal words of Sweet Brown “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” Well for 10 days anyway!
