Istanbul First Impressions
Driving through the city from the airport in the minibus was amazing. Istanbul is a unique blend of old and new. It’s very cosmopolitan and it was wonderful to see the Turkish Flags blowing in the breeze – they added so much colour to the experience. We later found out it was Victory Day and that was why everyone had flags out, we just thought everyone was patriotic. When we pulled into the Sultanahment historical district where we...
The Journey
After 40 hours of travelling we arrived in Istanbul! The journey in Emirates Business Class was absolutely sensational. The food and drink service was fantastic and it was great to be able to lie flat and have a snooze. We had a brief stop over at Changi Airport in Singapore. The highlight there was the cleanest public toilet in the world! They are very feedback driven in Singapore and they actually ask you to rate your toilet...
On the road again….FINALLY!
After 15 years of schlepping for corporate the time has come for this punk to hit the road and have a break. The blog has been very quiet since 2012 which, oddly enough, was the last time I had a decent holiday. So here I am in seat 7F in Emirates Business Class drinking a mojito and enjoying the fruits of my corporate slog. It wasn’t easy getting here. I’ve endured a couple of extremely busy and challenging years at the...

This was certainly the biggest event we have ever participated in since taking up running 3 years ago and the first time we’ve raced outside Tasmania. Sydney certainly puts on a show for this run. The scenery itself is...
Loy Krathong at the Bliston
Yesterday the Thai people officially officially celebrated Loy Krathong. This beautiful festival is celebrated on the full moon on the twelfth lunar month of the Thai calendar. We were fortunate to celebrate this at our hotel last Friday. The Bliston put on a Loy Krathong themed pool party for all of their guests. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. Loy Krathong is an ancient festival with origins deep in Thai...
Fakery in Bangkok
We all know that Thailand is renowned for its fake Rolex watches and “genuine copies” of designer handbags, however there is another kind of fakery that I have observed on this visit. I’m sure it was always there to some degree but this time it’s very pronounced and makes me wonder if the Thais are suffering a identity crisis. I’m talking about the western theming of shops and malls in Bangkok. Nowhere is...
