Fakery in Bangkok

We all know that Thailand is renowned for its fake Rolex watches and “genuine copies” of designer handbags, however there is another kind of fakery that I have observed on this visit. I’m sure it was always there to some degree but this time it’s very pronounced and makes me wonder if the Thais are suffering a identity crisis.

I’m talking about the western theming of shops and malls in Bangkok. Nowhere is this more evident than the newly opened Terminal 21 shopping centre. This shopping centre has an airport-like theme with each of its 8 levels themed to a different country. Before you ask, there is no Thailand here but guess that’s the point.

Terminal 21 is an example of theming to excess. Don’t get me wrong I LOVED it for what it was and I recommend visiting if only to experience their toilets (more on that later) I love kitsch and this place takes it to another level, however, the only thing authentic and original here were the local designer stores located predominantly on the Tokyo and London levels. They were fabulous and sure as hell beat the same same but different stores at MBK and Platinum. Whilst the shops had few corporate punky items I didn’t make any purchases apart from discounted Nike gear (yes I’m a gym tragic).

The environment was so sterile and themeparky and so unlike the gritty world outside it’s doors (the notorious Soi Cowboy is literally at it’s doorstep). Even the food court was too cutesy and western on the “San Francisco Pier 21” Floor which even had its own fake version of Chinatown replete with plastic Peking duck!!!

Once you’ve had your fill at the food court you may need refreshing of the toilet variety. Yes, I did warn you I’d come back to the toilets! The loos are definitely a sight to behold and its clear to see that they have spared no expense in design or detail. From the gilt edged mirrors to the luxury hand wash, its all top class. The crowning glory, however, is the throne which comes complete with deluxe Japanese style toilet seat (available on all levels and not just Tokyo). I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed my first “wash ‘n dry” experience and hope to have more!

If you want to escape Thailand for a while and transport yourself to a life-size version of Disney’s “it’s a small world” ride and get a good ass karchering while you’re at it then this is definitely the place for you.
